The Importance of In-Car Training:
The I’LL DRIVE School of Motoring
Approach
Why Experiential Learning Surpasses Online Modules for Future
Driving Instructors
Becoming a driving instructor is a significant journey that requires more than just a basic
understanding of the rules of the road—it demands practical skills, adaptability, and confidence
built through direct experience. At I’LL DRIVE School of Motoring, we've recognised that while
training to become a driving instructor can be challenging for many, the obstacles faced are not
always due to a lack of capability. Sometimes, a person’s background or previous experience can
make the process feel harder, not because they are incapable, but because they haven’t been
supported in the right way.
Unfortunately, within the industry, there are many national driving schools that offer packages
appearing highly attractive on the surface but fall short in delivering what aspiring instructors
truly need. Frequently, these packages promise comprehensive training but predominantly offer
online modules with limited in-car instruction. While online resources can be valuable for
research and theoretical learning, they cannot replace the real-world skills gained from being
behind the wheel with learners.
From my experience teaching candidates to become instructors, the transformative
moments—the ones that build true competence—happen inside the car, not in front of a
computer screen. The ability to respond to unique driving scenarios, adapt teaching styles to
different learners, and manage the complexities of real traffic conditions are skills that cannot
be mastered solely through online simulations or theoretical lessons.
That’s why at I’LL DRIVE School of Motoring; we have shaped our training model to prioritise
hands-on, in-car experience. Our approach is based on the principle that research and study
should support, not replace, practical application. Our candidates spend most of their training
time actively teaching and learning within a vehicle, guided by experienced mentors who
provide immediate feedback and coaching in real-time situations.
We do not model our course after computer-based training, nor do we rely on virtual modules
as the core of our methodology. Instead, our focus is on immersing future instructors in the real-
world environments they will eventually work in, ensuring they are confident and capable
before they begin teaching independently.
In summary, while technology and online tools have their place in modern education, nothing
compares to the value of in-car training when it comes to preparing the next generation of
driving instructors. At I’LL DRIVE School of Motoring, we are dedicated to supporting every
candidate according to their needs, backgrounds, and strengths—ensuring that no one is left
behind and everyone is given the tools to succeed where it matters most: on the road.
